Arianism is the doctrine of Arius of Alexandria (? - 336), who denied the divinity of Christ. His doctrine was somewhat influential for a time. Arius was opposed at the Council of Nicaea in 325 by Athanasius of Alexandria. Athanasius was an exponent of the now orthodox view that the Son `is of one substance with the Father.` Athanasius’ position prevailed and Arius was banished. Arius continued to have a following until about the 7th century and his influence can still be found in numerous sects today.
