A more or less anti-religious movement with roots as far back in history as the end of the Middle Ages. Humanism grew and evolved during the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Industrial Revolution, and democratic movements.

The basic principle of Humanism is that `Man is the measure of all things.` Humanism seeks freedom from ecclesiastical authority and liberation of the intellect. Humanism teaches faith in Progress and Man’s ability to improve his condition rather than investing this faith in any deity.

According to the Humanists, man has the spiritual resources to bring knowledge and understanding to the people of the world and to solve any moral problems. All men are deserving of the respect and tolerance of their fellow man, regardless of race, religion, social position, etc. In short, the Humanists hold that the belief in God and/or a religious creed is not important.
